Sardar Satpal Singh Thukral, renowned social activist of the city, on Monday, embarked barefoot on a 220 km journey from Rudrapur to Ghazipur border. The journey aims to pray for the eternal rest of the people who lost their lives during the ongoing farmers’ movement at various Delhi borders against the contentious agri-reform laws. The journey also focuses on revoking the black laws and introducing ballot paper back into the elections in place of EVMs, said Thukral.

Thukral recited an ‘Ardas’ at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gole Market in the city before starting his journey. Talking to Bhonpuram portal, Thukral said, “My journey will pass through Rampur, Moradabad, Garh and Gajraula to culminate at Ghaziabad. After a day’s rest at the movement site, I will reach Sheeshganj Gurdwara in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, where prayers for the spiritual peace of the farmers killed during the movement will be held”, he added.

Thukral said that for the past ten months, farmers from across the country are agitating but the BJP led Central government has turned deaf ears to their demands of repealing agri-laws and making MSP a law. “The farmers, far from their homes, faced bad weather conditions, mental and physical illness and because of these problems more than 500 people lost their lives during the ongoing protest. I will pray at the Gurdwara that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi sympathetically revises his decision and meet the farmers’ demands”, he said.

Thukral said that he also demands introducing ballot papers back into the election process and removing the controversial EVMs. Notably, Thukral has been on fast for the past 11 days and he is doing all his work barefoot. “Even after returning from Delhi, I will continue to do so till my demands are not met”, Thukral further said.
